Vendragar the Experienced in
“Dinokonda’s Harbor”
Story by Chriscripts.
“You’re certain you want to go there? The Northern Harbour’s only a few days travel away.”
“No. Vendragar is certain.”
Vendragar is sat at a tavern with a man who was almost as muscular as he was. His short hair and trimmed beard were grey, but it was clear that this was a man who was by no means too weak or too old for any action. A tight white shirt barely concealing his thick chest. Even Vendragar himself finds his eyes drifting away from this sailor’s face. The two of them were practically drenched in sweat from the warm summer sun.
The Captain smirks before taking a swig of his flagon.
“You’re not a very wise man, are you Vendragar?”
“Wisdom not needed. Gets in way of job. Vendragar much prefer instinct.”
The Captain leans closer, raising an eyebrow.
“That so? You sound like a man I’d like to sail with. But, why are you so eager to travel from Dinokonda’s Harbour anyway?”
Vendragar sits up, as if about to present some sort of business proposal.
“Vendragar like to travel quickly for job. Cannot travel quickly if harbour is infested. Few days delay means Vendragar may miss out on job. Vendragar also prove worth to people of the harbourtown by slaying Dinokonda, means even more jobs. You understand, yes?”
“I suppose. But is it really worth risking your life over? The Dinokonda isn’t your average beast. That thing has elemental breath. Their fangs can turn you to stone. They’ve done horrific things to countless other warriors…”
Vendragar leans back in his seat, taking a swig from his own flagon.
“HA! No beast can best Vendragar. Vendragar need only axe to show beast who is superior.”
The Captain laughs a hearty laugh, taking another swig.
“Such confidence! You truly are embracing the way of the barbarian, aren’t you?”
“Is only way I have known. Why should Vendragar live in fear? Fear leads to death.”
“Too true… You’d make a good sailor, you know… Alright, Vendragar. I’ll make a deal with you. I will sail with you from Dinokonda’s Harbour once you have vanquished the beast… As long as you spend some time with me in the captain’s quarters during the voyage. Not often I meet men like you, I’d like to make the most of it. Do we have an agreement?”
Vendragar chuckles.
“Why are you offering Vendragar payment for request Vendragar make? You are not a man of deals.”
The Captain rubs his chin, locking eyes with Vendragar as the two grin at one another.
“For a man who lacks wisdom, you certainly know how to make a guy excited.”
“Vendragar has plenty of experience.”
The Captain leans back, shuffling his chair closer to the table to contain his “excitement”. He finishes off his ale, and clears his throat.
“Very well. I shall set off to receive my ship from the Northern Harbour whilst you head to Dinokonda Harbour. Are you certain you can handle this?”
“Vendragar has a visit to captain’s quarters. Vendragar knows he can handle this.”
Vendragar stands up, starting to walk away from the table, pausing by The Captain to rub his chin, and lean in for a kiss, before walking away without another word. The Captain looking speechless as he tries to hide the enormous blush on his cheeks.
